Noted Bahraini artist Areej Rajab is revealing a series of never-before-seen original, abstract impressionist paintings on canvas in a brand-new exhibition – dubbed Limitless: Original Artworks by Areej Rajab – at The Art Centre by Bahrain National Museum, from Tuesday November 7 to Thursday 30.
Unbound by any restrictions of genre and style, Rajab’s work is characterised by dynamic brush strokes, and shifting hues and forms. In Limitless, two collections are on show: the first is a series of stained, layered paintings that have been reworked numerous times on one canvas, using a variety of colours that are bright and yet muted, evoking a dream-like quality.
The second series is the artist’s latest body of work, which sees Rajab return to a more suggestive style and which starkly differs to the other collection. The pieces are not clearly defined, but a landscape is present and viewed as if through a hazy, soft-focus lens.
The artist developed a passion for colour when she was just three years old, watching her aunt, the traditional Islamic water-colourist Sameeha Rajab, work at the canvas. Despite her love of art, however, Rajab first studied Business and General Management at the University of Bahrain, and became a mother-of-three, before she decided to pursue her creative dreams. Eventually, she took her family to the UK, where she attended the London College of Art.
Since then, Areej has exhibited extensively throughout the Middle East and across the UK, as well as shared her gift with students as an art teacher. Limitless: Original Artworks by Areej Rajab is being exhibited at The Art Centre, Bahrain National Museum. Tue Nov 7-Thu Nov 30; Mon-Sun 10am-7pm. A private viewing takes place on Tue Nov 7, 7pm-10pm. www.areej-rajab.com.
