The lift up to the Golden Club sets the standard pretty high for the evening to follow, feeling a little like a Vegas elevator that should open onto a room of blackjack tables and card-counting sharks. Despite the best efforts of the truly international stage acts (we counted Moroccan, Russian and nondescript belly dancers), the Golden Club never really makes good on its casino promises.
That said, it’s still a fun place to grab a drink and indulge in an evening of unashamedly kitsch entertainment. You’ll have to pay for a table if you don’t want to eat (you won’t be missing out, though), but if you’re going to be there for the duration then it’s definitely worth it. In need of a little updating to compete with the more stylish Bahraini nightspots, you get the feeling that the city needs places like the Golden Club, purely for comedy value.
