Bahrain’s lively nightlife scene has many merits, but it has been let down in the past by a certain lack of sophistication. The future, however, looks bright if this totem of urban chic is anything to go by. The workaday surrounds of the Best Western hotel don’t hold much in the way of immediate promise, but you will be transported somewhere infinitely more desirable the moment you pass the glamorous female greeter and into the dark interior of the club.

It’s not that Cocoon is without its rough edges – some of the leather seats are slightly scuffed and the route to the toilets is somewhat circuitous. In a way, however, these quirks actually make it a lot more lovable than most über-trendy hangouts. Local and international DJs provide an eclectic soundtrack that runs the gamut from classic soul and disco tunes, to pumping house and electro, while the black-shirted bar staff serve up impeccably prepared cocktails and plates of fresh sushi.

It’s rare to find a place that shows so much ambition without succumbing to off-putting pretension, and the fact that Cocoon manages to toe this thin line so convincingly means that its status as one of Bahrain’s hippest hangouts is in no danger of diminishing anytime soon.
