If you google ‘beauty bloggers Bahrain’ the first (and second, and third) thing to come up is Blonde in Bahrain, the musings of tow-headed Aussie Georgina, who calls herself a ‘blonde with a blog and a dog’.
Working as a web design and commucations for web media teacher, Georgina is surrounded by lots of very social media-minded folk, blogging abounds and about 18 months ago she decided to get in on the act.
She says: ‘I’ve lived in Bahrain for 16 years and there’s so much happening here but people don’t always know about things. You often hear that old cry of ‘there’s nothing to do in Bahrain’, well, it’s just not true, there’s loads going on.’
So, how does that translate, in just a year and a half, into the island’s most popular beauty blog with more than 14,000 followers across the blog, Facebook and other social media platforms?
Georgina explains: ‘Well, firstly you have to decide which blogging platform to use (she’s on Wordpress) and then you have to make sure you’re on all the social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. I do different versions of my posts and different bits and pieces on each platform – if someone’s following me in more than one place, they’re not going to want to read the same thing over and over again.
‘I also try to make my posts really concise, I don’t want to have lots of text, everyone has their own ideas so I don’t go into loads detail, and I like to have beautiful images.’
And, possibly most importantly, Blonde in Bahrain is relentlessly sunny and positive.
‘I get sent lots of products and invited to lots of things,’ says Georgina ‘but I only blog about the things I love.’
A quick look online reveals ‘things I love’ includes Georgina’s dog Mai, who has her own section on the blog, and lots and lots of beauty and fashion stuff plus a bit of fun too.
In the ‘I heart’ section, you’ll find favourite make-up, fashion selections such as ‘the jeans to wear if you’re a pear’, and adding to her designer bag collection sensibly – one a year, around September, all thought-out and researched in advance to get the best deal.
In fact, reading Blonde in Bahrain, it sounds as if Georgina’s life is simply full of lovely things, from beauty treatments and shopping, to making macaroons or checking out the grape room at The Meat Co.
But, sorry girls, there is a dark side. Georgina confesses: ‘On yeah, I love it but it has taken over a bit. I spend about four hours a day on all the different platforms and answering emails – if somebody takes the time to email me, I always try to reply. At the end of the day your blog is you, so you have to be nice and be polite.
‘I’ve also had to cut down on events, I get invited to something every day, some days two or three a day! But I’ve limited it to one event a day – otherwise I’d have not time to actually write about it.’
