Alternative therapies are becoming fashionable around the world
Time Out Bahrain staff
Alternative therapies are becoming ever-more fashionable around the world. We quiz authors Sue and Simon Lilly on their unique expertise ahead of workshops in Bahrain this month.
You might be sceptical about ‘new age’, ‘new-fangled’ therapies but countless people across the globe swear by them as they provide a holistic and more natural approach to healing. British therapists Sue and Simon Lilly have been working in a number of disciplines for over 30 years, have written over 30 books, and have seen the effects first-hand during their travels around the world giving workshops. Now, ahead of their arrival in Bahrain this month, we find out how we could all open our minds and allow ourselves to be ‘healed’.
Sue and Simon on crystal healing... ‘We explain it as the use of crystals to help someone move towards a better sense of well-being, to release stress and to clear away obstacles that prevent them from achieving their goals.
‘One of the earliest demonstrations we did of the crystal energy nets (specific placement of certain crystals, the effect of which is reliable and can be replicated with anyone) was on a medical doctor. Unbeknown to us he had injured his shoulder and it was causing him a lot of pain. After five minutes in the layout he felt his shoulder “click” and the muscles and bones relax and settle back into place.’
On colour therapy... ‘Colour therapy is one where there is a huge amount of scientific research to explain its effects. Colour works on two levels: one is biological and we can do little to stop our bodies and the chemical reactions within our bodies from reacting to colour. The second level is more to do with cultural and social conditioning and how colours can be chosen to create particular effects. These combine to give an effective, direct and quick way of changing emotions, thoughts and physical sensations.
‘In everyday life, we are subjected to colour from advertising, décor, clothing and our environment but seem unaware of how much colour affects us and what surreptitious results are obtained by clever, deliberate use of it.’
On dragon energies... ‘Dragons are of myth and legend yet somehow continue to permeate literature, dreams, art and imaginations. Dragon energy represents the flow of our surroundings, whereas crystals represent the structure. In this workshop we look at some of the myths about dragons and how nature reflects them. These in turn give insight into helping ourselves to heal and how we can work to create healing environments, both locally and globally.’
On tree energies... ‘Working with tree energies is largely about learning to pay attention to what the senses are picking up – learning to shift the focus of our mind’s attention slightly in favour of listening to the body. The presence of trees engenders a shift in our awareness. This is so normal that we fail to notice it most of the time. The physical qualities of trees – their shade, their light, their sounds and scents – are part of this interaction that automatically quietens the mind and relaxes the body. However, these are also only one part of a much more wide-reaching energetic picture that we can use to restore the balance we have lost in our everyday lives. Every sort of tree has learned how to survive and thrive whether it is by adapting certain qualities or by learning to balance. Learning to pay attention to the qualities of trees can also help us to restore our own balance. If nothing else, working with tree energies teaches us to be still and listen – qualities that are lacking in the world today.’
On Sue and Simon...
What do you say to someone who is skeptical of what you do? Hah! We don’t blame them! Like a lot of the more unusual therapies you need to actually try them out to really get an idea of what they can do. No one is sure how crystals are able to help but then no one is really sure how aspirin works either.
What led you both into alternative therapies? Sue: My interest developed while my children were very young and I wanted to find holistic ways to deal with family crises. This led to meeting people who had interests in crystals, colour, astrology, homoeopathy and flower essences. Very quickly I began taking courses to learn more about the tools I had discovered in an attempt to get my brain working again after going through pregnancies and coping with and communicating with toddlers. I began working with others and quickly saw what a huge difference a holistic approach can make in peoples’ lives.
Simon: I have always been interested in the past and most of the alternative therapies around today are either very ancient or else derive from ancient bodies of knowledge. Once one discovers that a system of improving well-being has benefits, it is natural to explore some more. I was lucky enough to have some good teachers and then to have the opportunity to see how effective the therapies were in peoples’ lives.’
