We try a Royal Turkish hammam and aroma hot stone massage in Seef
Time Out Bahrain staff
The promise To remove all your dead skin cells and get you all bright and shiny again in the hammam, followed by a massage to utterly relax you and get rid of any negative energy.
Step by step After slipping into my robe I head to Heavenly Spa’s relaxation area where a pot of ginger and lemon tea awaits. As I start getting into spa mode thanks to the moody, gentle ambience, my friendly therapist Betty picks me up and takes me to the biggest Turkish hammam facility I’ve ever seen. It is in fact the only full Turkish hammam in Bahrain and, I’m told, is the largest hammam in the country as well. As I enter, Betty pops a traditional robe around my waist and then I’m instructed to sit in a pool that’s 34˚C for five minutes, after which I’m led into the steamy hammam. I lie down on the marble while Betty pours warm water all over me and scrubs me down, covers me in foam and scrubs me down again.
Then she rubs a honey and sugar mix over my body and leaves me to absorb for ten minutes. I’m washed off and then instructed to immerse myself in the 12˚C pool quickly, leaving me feeling squeaky clean and utterly refreshed.
Then it’s on to the fully body massage which combines aromatherapy and hot stone techniques to leave you truly de-stressed. The multi-talented Betty also leads this treatment, starting on my back and moving on to the limbs, chest, head and face. By the time she’s done, I honestly feel like I’m floating.
Pros • The therapist consistently checks you’re comfortable and that the pressure and temperature is good for you.
• The combination of these two treatments leaves you not only feeling relaxed but totally refreshed and rejuvenated.
• You have access to other facilities such as the relaxation zone, Jacuzzi and sauna before and after your treatment.
• For such faultless treatments in a five-star spa, they’re very reasonably priced.
Cons • The hot stones don’t make much of an appearance in this particular massage but the aromatherapy is so soothing you barely notice.
The verdict After many treks around spas in the region, I can quite honestly say this is one of the best treatment combinations I’ve received. Everything was relaxing from start to finish and I felt as though I was walking on air for the rest of the day. I also felt the effects of the relaxing aroma hot stone massage for days to come. It comes highly recommended. BD40, 60 minute Royal Hammam and BD35, 60 minutes aroma hot stone therapy massage. Heavenly Spa by Westin, The Westin Bahrain City Centre, Seef (1717 1122).
