As UAE hype builds for The Dark Knight Rises – a film already released in most of the world – here’s a chance to get back up to speed with its predecessor. Christopher Nolan’s second Batman movie was a knotty beast, somewhat overshadowed by the death of its Joker, Heath Ledger. The passage of time hasn’t been entirely kind: while there were some incredible moments (many of them involving Ledger), The Dark Knight was overlong, overwrought and largely incomprehensible. But the sheer scope left us speechless anyway. Batman was always the one superhero it was okay for non-geeks to like, and Nolan tore up the screen with his homage, opening up the genre to the rest of us and raising the bar for action movies forever. Its flaws may be as epic as its action scenes, but The Dark Knight’s sledgehammer approach make for an unforgettable ride.
