Movies of the mind
Be the first to comment 13 July 2010The Cell (2000)
This early J-Lo vehicle divided audiences: some critics complained The Cell favoured style over substance; others declared it one of the best
films of the year. Lopez is the child psychologist who uses virtual reality to walk around a serial killer’s mind and find out where he’s stowed his latest victim – cue various bizarre visuals including an unforgettable scene with a dissected horse, inspired by Damien Hirst. If you’re open to the idea, it’s an oddly compelling journey, skewing satisfyingly away from what you’d expect of the serial killer genre. Plus, J-Lo is surprisingly likeable, probably because she hadn’t yet sunk to the depths of Maid in Manhattan.
