Time Out Bahrain staff
BD1 2nd Chance
What a great week I had discovering charity shops in Bahrain as a challenge to find some fabulous outfits for both day and evening wear.
I was amazed at how generous people are in handing over their clothes, and other goodies, for the benefit of both humans and animals.
And to be honest, I was surprised at the range of nice and very useful items, from kids’ and adults’ clothes, shoes and accessories to books, DVDs, toys and even home furnishings (you can find this at another branch of 2nd Chance), available at unbelievably low prices to go.
I started with an old charity boutique run by Bahrain young ladies association (Al-Nahda), which was established back in 1955. The building is beautiful and worth a visit on its own. Inside you’ll find all sorts of donations with cash raised going to organisations which help abused women. The shop’s in Gudaibiya near the Concord Hotel and it’s open Mon-Thur, 9am-2pm, Sat 10am-1pm and Sun 8.30am-1.30pm/4pm-7pm. Call 17 430 488.
How does the idea of giving second chances work for you? A second chance to re-use your unwanted stuff could offer a second chance to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome some of the island’s abandoned and mistreated animals. That’s the ethos behind the 2nd Chance Charity shop at Budaiya Highway, upstairs from Tibra’s pet supply store by The Bookcase, which raises funds for Tony the ‘Dogfather’ Waters’ ARC – Animal Rescue Centre. The shop opens on Mon & Wed 10am-noon and Fri 4pm-6pm. Call 17 695 848.
Next up was the small shop at St Christopher’s Cathedral where I was made to feel very welcome and, once again, found lots of items in a great condition at great prices. Shopping here can help patients’ prayers for good health come true with cash from the shop going to help local hospitals. The shop opens on Fri 3pm-5pm and Sat 10am-12noon. Call 17 253 866.
And of course there’s the BSPCA (Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Thrift Shop, of which the volunteers working there say ‘If the shelter is the heart of the BSPCA then the Thrift Shop is its lifeline!’.
Providing much of the organisation’s regular income, this is the biggest charity shop in Bahrain selling a wide variety of miscellaneous items, nothing is ever wasted! You can find the shop at 6 Busheiri Gardens, just off the Budaiya Highway, and it’s open Tue, Thur & Fri 9am-noon and Sat & Sun 3pm-5pm. Call 17 593 479.
