Iconic and foreign versions of timeless cinema artwork
While it’s usually the actors, directors and CGI that get all the plaudits for movie making, the promotional posters that accompany most releases are often works of art themselves: and they look pretty nice hanging from living room or bedroom walls. Collecting retro version of film promotional posters has become popular online, as has finding foreign variants of classics, such as the fantastic Hong Kong poster for the original Star Wars movie.
And movie posters are big business. In June of this year a rare poster from the 1927 silent classic Metropolis was sold for around Dhs3,000,000. Even Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage made Dhs1,141,285 on his original print of the 1931 classic Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, when he sold off his collection in 2009. Thankfully, you don’t have to spend an absolute fortune if you want to buy classic movie artwork, and plenty of reprints are available online for a fraction of the price.
Casablanca Everyone loves this classic from 1942, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman (set in Africa during the early days of WWII). This print can be bought at Movie Poster Exchange and is an original. But it’ll cost you a cool Dhs36,000 if you want to hang it on your wall.
Star Wars A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, illustrators had great fun designing the promotional posters for Star Wars. Tons of these foreign variants can be found online, including this Hong Kong version which will cost you Dhs36,709 at Cinemasterpieces.
2001: A Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece about life, the universe and everything is one of the most iconic films ever made. And this original print will set you back a tidy Dhs14,690 from Movie Poster Exchange.

Batman Christian Bale’s dark knight might be all sombre and moody, but you can’t beat the kitch of the original from 1966, starring Adam West. This can be bought from Cinemasterpieces. Email them for a list of their prices.
Psycho The classic spine-chiller, directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960, about the relationship between hotel owner Norman Bates and his mother. This is a reprint of a French poster and will cost you Dhs47 from poster aficionados Movie Goods.
