Justin Bieber Believe World Tour Cue the screaming, Biebermania will touch down in the region on May 4 when the teen megastar takes to the stage at the Dubai Sevens Stadium. Justin Bieber has been one of the world’s biggest celebrities since he was first discovered by an American talent scout on YouTube. Best known for hit singles ‘Baby’ and ‘Boyfriend’, he is also one of the biggest names in social media with more than 27 million followers on Twitter and almost three billion views on his official Youtube channel alone. The tour so far has attracted its fair share of controversy with Bieber slammed for keeping young fans waiting in London and the boy wonder’s pet monkey seized by German authorities because he didn’t have the right paperwork. Flying Dutchman Famed opera composer Richard Wagner’s popular work, Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), for which Wagner both composed the music and wrote the libretto, arrives at the Royal Opera House Muscat, to celebrate his 200th anniversary. The Flying Dutchman tells the romantic story of a man cursed to roam the violent seas for eternity until one woman’s true love offers him salvation. The opera will be presented by the Latvian National Opera, which has been performing The Flying Dutchman since 1919. Conducted by Maestro Mārtiņš Ozoliņš. May 8 & 10, Royal Opera House Muscat. Monster Jam Live in Abu Dhabi These two-metre-tall, five-tonne trucks take centre stage at Zayed Sports City for a night of horse powered stunts and tricks. The Monster Jam trucks will face-off in two different competitions – racing and freestyle – on a giant custom-designed track, full of obstacles to soar over – or smash through. Al Gaffal Traditional 60ft Dhow Race This long-distance traditional 60ft dhow race is the last during the watersports season at the club. The contest, which commemorates the pearl divers who were integral to the early trading port of Dubai, originally started in 1991 at the small uninhabited island of Sur Bu Na’air with around 50 dhows each measuring 43ft. Today it has grown into a major event attracting around 100 craft and 3,000 sailors which makes for quite a spectacle. Sat, May 18, Dubai International Marine Club, Entry is free (+ 971 4 399 5777).
Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters The world’s top eight darts players land in the emirate for the first leg of the PDC’s World Series of Darts. Reigning and 16-time world champ Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor will lead the field of eight players in the knockout event, the first ever professional darts tournament to be held in Dubai. There will be four knock-out quarter finals on Thu, May 23, before the semis and finals on Fri, May 23.
