Our favourite assorted stores to explore on the island
Time Out Bahrain staff
Haraka Melting Moustache: Yep, it’s a weird name for this funky little pop-up shop with weird and wonderful goodies from all over the place and the third line of Haraka watches from designer Muna Yateem. Catch this one while you can as, at the moment, it’s only due to be there till the end of September. Open daily, Yateem Centre, Central Manama (32 221 344).
Brands for Less: Bits of all sorts from designer clothing and funky, if often slightly odd, shoes to dog coats, bedding and winter coats all at seriously knock-down prices. This is another one where you need time to rummage and, if you find something you want, buy it straight away as stock turnover is quick. Open Sat-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri 4-10pm. Beside Salmaniya Hospital, take the turn opposite the Sana discount store and follow the road round to the left (17 245 736).
Harmony Jewels: A gem, pun again fully intended, that not only sells traditional jewellery but also designs and makes some seriously funky pieces. You come up with the idea and they’ll produce it for you. We’re currently coveting the paw-print Pandora-style tribute charm they created for a friend. Open Sat-Thu 10am-1pm and 5pm-8pm, upstairs in the Gold Souq (39 171 921).
New Silver Jewellery: Not a jewellery shop, more of a bazaar with antique bits and pieces, old phones, Arabic paintings and the odd fez thrown in for good measure. One of those places you could lose yourself just browsing. Open daily Yateem Centre (39 127 904).
Party Daze: Everything you need for your party from matching superhero table ware to a good, but pricey, selection of fancy-dress costumes. Open daily 10am-9pm, Adliya Avenue, turn left at the traffic lights at the top of Osama bin Zayed (17 825 523).
Room 2 Rock: The musicians’ sweetie shop. Not just a store selling a whole range of musical instruments, Room 2 Rock also provides training on how to play them and supervised practice spaces where you can rock out to your heart’s content. Open Sun-Thu noon-8.45pm, Wali Alahd Highway, Hamala (the same section at Sage & Sirloin) (17 611 785). Also at Sheikh Isa Avenue, Block 338, Adliya (17 745 203).
Things To Do: Quality arts and crafts supplies, pottery, needlework and threads and alongside this a whole equestrian section upstairs with riding clothing, tack and all manner of horsey accessories. Open Sat-Thu 8am-12.30pm and 3.30-6.30pm. Beside Burgerland on the Budaiya Highway (17 590 409).
Wheels of Arabia: OK, so we’d probably be too scared to actually ride one in Bahrain’s bonkers traffic but that doesn’t stop us Roman Holiday dreaming every time we see a little Vespa or Lambretta scooter puttering along and, if we did ever get the courage to have a go, Wheels of Arabia’s where we’d got to try it out. Open Sat-Thu 10am-1pm and 3pm-8pm. Budaiya Highway next to Harley Davidson (77 050 333).
