Make the most of a balmy, breezy evening in Bahrain
Time Out Bahrain staff
Block 338: This place is all about the garden, one of the largest outdoor seating areas on the island where your food will often be accompanied by live music or comedy. We’ve moaned about the shambolic service before but, despite this, it continues to be a really popular evening venue with good food and good offers. We also hear the management’s had a bit of a shake-up and is making improved service a priority so we’ll be giving it another try in the coming months and reporting back. Open daily noon-2am, Adliya (17 710 338).
La Fontaine: As the name suggests, there is indeed a fountain around which tables are arranged in the large, airy courtyard. Moody lighting gives a romantic feel and the food is pretty much always excellent with some really interesting menu choices. You’ll also find the staff both knowledgeable and friendly, so don’t feel shy to ask if there’s something you fancy that’s not on the regular menu. Traffic round about can be a bit of a nightmare but the venue does have its own parking. Open Tue-Sun 11.30am-2.30pm and 6.30pm-10.30pm, Hoora Avenue, Ras Ruman (17 230 123).
Coco’s: You can’t book at this cheap and cheerful spot in the heart of Adliya and, during the cooler months, it is always really popular so make sure to arrive early if you want to sit outside (or usually inside for that matter). The menu’s extensive and, with a large main course coming in at about BD5 or under, it’s really good value. However, be aware, there never seem to be quite enough staff so be prepared to wait a while and also, if you have any allergies, make sure you are more than clear about them. Open daily 10am-midnight, Adliya (17 716 512).
La Mer: This is really a two-in-one as the outdoor section is actually downstairs at Tapas but, if it’s not busy, you can usually ask for the fantastic seafood selection from upstairs to be served on the downstairs terrace. On busier nights simply go for the seriously good tapas selection with a glass of Spanish grape to suit the mood. Open daily 7pm-11pm, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa (17 636 363).
Masso: Tucked away beside Masso at The Palace Boutique Hotel you’ll also find a terrace and two private gardens where you can chill out with pals and dine on the restaurant’s excellent fare or take your pick from the extensive weekend brunch menu. Open daily noon-3pm and 7pm-2am, Adliya (17 721 061).
Pizza Express: One of our favourite spots on The Lagoon, great food and good for families as the kids can get involved with choosing their toppings and helping to create their own pies. This is one of the UK’s top pizza brands and we were a little concerned it would not travel well but, thankfully, our fears were ungrounded and adding the gorgeous setting of The Lagoon gives it a certain something that Luton just can’t match. Open Sun-Wed 11am-11pm, Thu-Sat 11am-11.30pm, The Lagoon, Amwaj (16 010 524).
Saffron: We love all the Saffrons but for outdoor eating, it has to be the one at Riffa Fort overlooking the Hunaniya Valley. Simple food in a stunning setting which is what this local-grown favourite does best. Call (66 373 728).
The Meat Co: While certainly not a cheap venue, the rooftop here is lovely and the food is always good which makes it the perfect spot for a special occasion. We’d highly recommend it for birthdays (as long as the celebrant’s not shy), when you’ll be treated to traditional South African songs and dancing accompanied by the staff making lots of noise on pots, pans and pretty much anything else they can get their hands on and encouraging all the other diners to join in! Open Sat-Wed 12.30pm-3.30pm and 7pm-11.30pm, Thu-Fri 12.30pm-midnight, Adliya (17 742 080).
Tian: The restaurant is inside but you can eat on the rooftop, which we reckon is a very cool space that would grace the best of city-centre bars and lofts. The menu’s extensive but you can have light bites and they also do a good bruch selection. Open daily noon-3pm, 7pm-midnight, Adliya (17 717 080).
Trader Vic’s: Another one that’s previously come in for a bit of flack from us for bad service but now under new management with a brand new menu just launched. The outside terrace is one of Bahrain’s favourite places to see and be seen, so make sure you put on your posing pants and enjoy the eclectic menu and mixed drink choices under the stars. Open daily 7pm-midnight, Ritz-Carlton Bahrain (17 586 555).
