Abu Dhabi Film Festival Fifty one countries represented, 91 films, 11 premieres. Officially opening proceedings is the crazy caper Life of Crime starring Jennifer Aniston and John Hawkes and there’s an abundance of films to suit every taste with offerings from as far afield as Tunisia, Australia and Mexico.
Some of our favourites include ‘The Double/Enemy’ ‘Eternal Thirst’, in Hindi with subtitles, ‘The Missing Picture’, in French with subtitles, ‘Blackfish’ and ‘Jealousy’.
On the actor front, Look out for Jesse Eisenberg who has two movies in the mix - ‘Night Moves’ and ‘The Double’, the former in which the ‘Social Network’ star plays an enviro-anarchist threatening to blow up a dam and the latter where he spirals into madness after a doppelganger steals his personal and professional life. Superheroes Presents Mike Skinner (The Streets) Superheroes Dubai is bringing the smooth-talker Mike Skinner to the emirate for a night of old skool beats, drum and bass and house music just the way you like it. Expect nothing less than the best from the man who was once The Streets and now is making waves in both the underground scene and on the British charts. Dubai International Motor Show The annual Dubai International Motor Show welcomes more than 100,000 motoring enthusiasts and motor trade professionals from all over the globe each year.
This exhibition has as much for car fans as it does for those working in the industry and is often the venue for some of the motoring world’s most prestigious launches. In 2009, the show hosted 13 world premieres, 40 regional launches and showed more than five new concept cars and over 220 new car models. Qatar International Boat Show The first Qatar boat show promises more than 150 craft on show, five global and regional launches and expects to attract around 15,000 visitors. There’ll be high-profile opening and closing ceremonies as well as entertainment over all five days with something for all the family. November 12-16, Lusail Marina, Doha, Qatar. South Africa vs Pakistan T20 cricket international The South African cricket team faces off against the Pakistani team at Dubai Sports City in the Bilateral Series which is part of the Future Cricket Tour Programmes (FTP) prepared by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
South Africa’s last Test series was at home in February against Pakistan where they lost the last T20 with Pakistan 0-1 after the first was washed out without a single ball bowled. DP World Tour Championship The DP World Tour Championship is the final event of the season-long Race to Dubai where The European Tour’s top 60 golfers will battle it out on the earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, over four days for a share of the combined $11.75 million prize-money and The Race to Dubai crown.

Alicia Keys – Set the World on Fire Tour Alicia Keys is coming back to Dubai for her Set the World on Fire Tour. The singer rose to fame in 2001 with her debut album, ‘Songs In A Minor’ featuring the multiple Grammy award-winning track ‘Fallin’ and is now considered one of the world’s most successful female R&B artists of all time. Sandance with Jamiroquai, Nile Rodgers and more The ‘Acid Jazz’ genius along with a number of sizzling artists will grace Dubai’s shores in an event that’s sure to get you moving. Jamiroquai, fronted by Jay Kay, have been going strong in the music scene since the early 90s, winning a Grammy in 1998. Flamenco Jazz The world acclaimed Grammy-winning WDR Big Band Cologne is joined by famed pianist and composer Chano Dominguez under the leadership of conductor Vince Mendoza to bring a provocative fusion of flamenco and jazz to the stage.
Each member of this excellent ensemble is a soloist with a distinctive timbre, which gives the entire orchestral sound great charisma. The ensemble also boasts three guest flamenco artists - singer Blas Cordoba, dancer-choreographer Daniel Navarro, and percussionist Israel Suarez. This diverse group – comprised of artists from Spain, Germany and America – reflects the far-flung influences informing both jazz and flamenco. November 16 & 17, Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman. Dubai Air Show 2013 This biennial event has been attracting visitors for the past 23 years. The event focuses on connecting buyers to sellers from all over the globe. The 2009 show drew more than 52,000 trade visitors who connected with 890 exhibitors from 47 countries.

Europe Live in Concert Break out the glitter and big hair, the legendary Europe, the amazing Swedish rock band famous for ‘The Final Countdown’ are headlining Rock in Dubai. Also performing are the UAE’s very own rock band Ascendant with an opening act from the Rolling Stone Middle East’s award winners the Boxtones hailing from Scotland and Canada (and formerly based in Bahrain). The Marriage of Figaro The Vienna State Opera, indisputably one of the most prestigious institutions in the world of classical music, presents Mozart’s beloved ‘The Marriage of Figaro’. This same opera premiered in Vienna in 1786 and has been a longstanding and widely celebrated part of the Vienna State Opera’s repertoire as well as a perennial favourite at opera houses around the world. A brilliantly timed comedy and one of Mozart’s crowning achievements as a composer, it is set in the manor of the Count and Countess Almaviva, who have been married for several years and find that their initial passion has faded. Figaro – a friend and former servant of the Count – is about to marry the Countess’s servant, Susanna, but the Count has his own lecherous designs on the young woman. F1 Powerboat World Championship Formula 1 Powerboat racing is the most spectacular water sport in the world. It has been described as driving the F1 race car at full speed over a ploughed field. In fact these boats accelerate faster than even the most state-of-the-art F1 cars; they are capable of going from standstill to 160km per hour in only only seconds, so this event should make for exciting viewing.
The Grand Prix consist of 12 teams of two drivers each and each race last for 45 minutes with up to 24 boats. November 28-29, Breakwater, Abu Dhabi. More info from www.f1h2o.com
Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens 2013 The Sevens is the largest annual sporting event in Dubai and the longest-running international sporting event in the Middle East.
