Chicago Until January 3, Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, UAE One of the most popular musicals of all time tells the story of two women in the 1920s who are imprisoned for their ‘crimes of passion’ and try to make the most of their situations by publicising the story through the sensationalist press of the day.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship January 16-19, Abu Dhabi Golf Club, UAE The region’s first big sporting event of 2014 which, since its inception in 2006, has become one of the biggest tournaments on the European Tour. Last year’s winner James Donaldson took the championship by a single stroke to walk away with the BD170,000 winner’s purse. American Wrestling Show Thursday, January 16, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, UAE This is a first for Dubai and a ‘must see’ for fans of the acrobatic moves of classic American TV wrestling.
This show’s fighters have played to sold-out events across Europe with their formidable technique and genuine entertainment from the likes of the masked villains of the piece to true muscle-mountain giants.
The audience can expect a range of fights from tag team – two on two – to hardcore where the wrestlers grab pretty much anything that comes to hand from tables and chairs to bins to beat their opponent.

Mixtape Rewind Friday, January 17, Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, UAE With the grooves of some of the best pop songs of yesteryear on the decks, the MixTape sessions are back for a second edition giving you the chance to relive the decades that taste forgot. This time they bring along the Vengaboys, known for their cheesy hits, along with Dr Alban and N-Trance, the band that brought us ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’. Headlining are the supremely cheesy but slightly addictive Boney M with the sounds of ‘Rivers of Bablyon’ and ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’.

Vienna State Ballet January 18-20, Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman Under the direction of famed dancer Manuel Legris, the Vienna State Ballet presents three choreographies, ballet masterpieces that are a great example of the company’s ongoing vitality and excellence. The evening opens with the great Serge Lifar’s neoclassical triumph, ‘Suite en Blanc’, set to excerpts from Lalo’s ‘Namouna’. Dutch choreographer Nils Christe’s ‘Before Nightfall’ follows, set to intense music by Bohuslav Martinů. This piece shows conflicting emotions from pain to intense beauty. The evening comes to a close with Roland Petit’s ‘L’Arlesienne’, a story of doomed passion told through compelling dance, vivid imagery and classic music by Bizet.
