Three days of French music, and Bushido has a birthday
Time Out Bahrain staff
Thursday May 15 Say happy birthday to a Bahrain favourite Spend longer than five minutes in Bahrain and you’re likely to hear people start talking in hushed tones about Bushido – it’s one of our favourite venues on the island, and we’re sure you love it too. Well, this month the sleek Japanese lounge celebrates its fifth birthday – clearly an achievement they were not going to let go unmarked. Join the party with a three-course, black-tie gala dinner and live show from acclaimed singer, pianist and model Clarita de Quiroz. BD35 (dinner and soft drinks), BD45 (plus grape pairing with each course). 8pm-late. Bushido Restaurant & Lounge, Seef (17 583 555).
May 15-18 Three days of French music Ahead of the worldwide French celebration of sounds Fête de la Musique, traditionally on June 21, there’s a mini music festival taking place in the middle of May. First up, a French jazz quartet visiting from Saudi Arabia will perform at Block 338 Restaurant, Lounge & Garden, in Adliyah, on Thursday May 10 from 7.30pm (free entry).
A day later head to a sound and light composition taking place at the Franco-Bahraini cultural centre Jamsheer House, Muharraq, from 4pm-11pm and featuring local collective Boho Baha. On Sunday May 18 listen to a tribute to iconic French singers Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour at the Alliance Francaise auditorium, Isa Town, performed by Veronique Forget and Nyno Carnino. The show starts at 8.30pm and is BD5 for members, BD10 for non-members. See www.facebook.com/france.bahrain
Friday May 16 Britney vs Beyoncé Queen B and The Princess of Pop go head-to-head for one night only in Bahrain... okay – not quite. But the singers’ songbooks do at least, as Club Buffalo has lined up tribute acts to both humongous female stars (both aged 32, incidentally) to play in a single evening. It simply sounds too fun to miss. DB5 entry, free for ladies all night and men before 8pm. BD10 with gala dinner and DB20 with unlimited beverages. Show 10pm. Club Buffalo, Ramee California Hotel, Juffair (39 688 207).
Friday May 16 Watch attempts at aviation Now something of an annual island institution, watch as mixed teams of adults and children attempt to conquer the skies, based on the famous Birdman of Bognor contest. All proceeds go to local charities, and band Revival will keep the mood jovial. BD2. 2pm. The British Club, Um Al Hassam (17 728 245).
