Pack a picnic, buy cake and eat fish in Bahrain this week
Time Out Bahrain staff
Park life While the weather’s cool take the opportunity to check out the new Prince Khalifa bin Salman Park – you may have spotted it on your left hand side as you drive over the Hidd Bridge towards Mina Salman, it’s all lit up in the evenings and there’s an observation tower. There’s skateboarding, fishing, biking, ball playing areas, playgrounds for young and older kids and lots more planned for the future. It’s really well used, so if you want to soak up some local atmosphere, go along, take a picnic and join in the fun.
Something different Take in a lovely lunch at one of our favourite restaurants, the Fish Market at Al Bander and as afternoon turns to dusk, watch the fishing boats heading out to sea. As 30 or 40 boats, including lots of traditional Bahraini dhow vessels, take to the waves, it really is quite something and reminds you of just where you are.
Tea and cake Take time out for a cup of tea and a slice of cake at the newly opened café and gift shop at the Bin Matar House in Muharraq. This beautifully restored 100-year-old Bahraini building used to be the majlis of the Bin Matar family and shows traditional Bahraini architecture in a modern setting. The café, operating alongside the existing Sheikh Ebrahim Centre art gallery, offers a selection of coffees and teas together with daily fresh cakes from Café Lilou and the gift shop stocks items that all have a unique link to Bahrain, Muharraq and the Bin Matar House in particular so not only can you find great gift and decorative ideas you’ll also be supporting Bahraini artisans, many of them women.
