Kate, 35, came to bahrain from dubai a year ago
• I moved from Dubai to take up the position of director of sales and marketing for the Crowne Plaza. I was attracted by Bahrain’s friendly and easygoing reputation. It’s also cheaper here and easier to get around.• I was born in the UK and before moving to the Middle East worked for a travel company in London for six years. Travel has always been a factor in my life.
• I love learning about different cultures, so I try to get out and explore Bahrain’s cultural spots, otherwise what’s the point of being here? I particularly love the National Museum and the tranquillity of the Bahrain Fort.
• One of my favourite weekend pastimes is a mani and pedi at my local salon in Juffair. A good weekend also includes Friday brunch or a barbecue at a friend’s house in Amwaj – I love Amwaj – and a meal out somewhere in Adliya where the quality of restaurants is amazing.
• I love what I do because it’s a challenge. What guests want is constantly changing, and everyone’s expectations are different, so it’s always a juggle to meet diverse needs. If you’ve seen the TV series Hotel Babylon, it’s exactly right… well, maybe slightly exaggerated.
• The hotel staff are a bit like family and have invited me to their homes; I particularly enjoyed Ramadan last year, when I was invited over for Iftar and tasted local specialities. Thanks to Bahrain’s friendliness, I felt settled here within weeks of touching down.
