More expats living and working on the island, says government

The number of expats living and working in Bahrain has increased, according to fresh government figures. Based on stats for the last three months of 2013, the number of employed expats grew by 5.1 percent when compared to the same period a year earlier, now reaching 514,156, and breaking the half a million mark for the first time. The number of Bahrainis employed rose by a similar figure of 3.9 percent to 152,473, according to the latest Labour Market Regulatory Authority report. Despite these figures, the report shows 14.5 percent less work visas were issued this year. Meanwhile the number of work visas which have been terminated grew 40 percent. Most new work visas were in the construction sector (26 percent), followed by the retail sector (25 percent) and manufacturing (13 percent).
