A new exhibit playfully approaches serious questions
Amateur photographer Kanwal Hameed has recently launched a new exhibition called #fashionforcharity at Al Riwaq Art Space that takes a playful approach to serious questions regarding identity, society, culture and the materially privileged generation of Gulf society.
‘In a series of photographers, I recreate iconic images from popular movements from around the world in 20th and 21st centuries,’ explains the artist.
‘In these images, the subjects’ postures and expressions from the original photographs are replaced with gestures and postures that convey an entirely different spirit.
‘Slogans are playful and silly, borrowing phrases from pop culture of today... The intention of this exhibition is to ask questions to a generation born into a world where history is a story that has already ended.’
The exhibition launched on September 15 at the gallery and will be open to the public until October 12. Al Riwaq Art Space, Block 338 (1771 7441).
