All bands have a sound, but only a lucky few have a ‘thing’
This is Happening 5/5 All bands have a sound, but only a lucky few have a ‘thing’. David Bowie had a thing. Michael Jackson most definitely had a thing. A thing gives a musician a chameleonic quality that makes their aesthetic identifiable, even if the host genre radically changes.
James Murphy, linchpin and chief dreamweaver of LCD Soundsystem, has a big thing. Murphy’s wilful genre-hopping is addressed here in ‘You Wanted a Hit’. Although its refrain of ‘You wanted a hit/But that’s not what we do’ is ironic considering that this album contains two of the outfit’s most chart-friendly cuts, the raucously ‘Boys Keep Swinging’-ish ‘Drunk Girls’ and ‘I Can Change’, an unguarded and spooky electropop heartbreak anthem in the old-school Erasure mould.
But while every track sounds splendid in isolation, from the brooding bass train ‘Dance Yrself Clean’ to the overclocked new-wave bongo freakout of ‘Pow Pow’, the record is most satisfying and dizzying in scope when listened to in theold-fashioned longplayer sense. Available now online.
