One of Ibiza’s biggest nightlife brands will be making its way to Bahrain next month. We check out the beats that bought it here
Damian D’Costa tells us what to expect
Cafe del Mar is one of a number of Ibiza brands to have become emblematic of the music scene on the Spanish island. Why bring it to Bahrain? Café del Mar is a bar located in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza and was founded by Ramón Guiral, Carlos Andrea, and José Les on 20 June 1980. It was a unique concept at that time and is all about beautiful sunsets, fun people and of course chill out music. Recently they have come onto the international scene with the Cafe del Mar hosting parties in Beirut, Dubai and across Asia. We felt The Dragon Beach Resort was the perfect venue for such an experience.
Bahrain and Ibiza are both islands – in fact they are roughly the same size. But that is where the comparison stops. Right?
Not at all. Spanish people are very warm and friendly, just like the Bahrainis. That is one of the major characteristics that makes a place... the people.
The Cafe del Mar experience is inherently alfresco. How will you recreate this at Muju?
The Dragon Resort is a very interesting venue, as it hosts a beautiful infinity pool, a shallow chill out pool, a nice cozy beach area, Muju’s outside deck area and our brand new outdoor lounge to be opened after Ramadan – all these areas will be utilized in the Cafe del Mar layout. There will be bean bags on the beach, nice white lounges to chill out in the sun by the pool, more private VIP areas on the Muju deck and lots of space to lounge around and eventually get up and dance!
Who will be playing at the October event? And, perhaps more importantly, what will they be playing? Cafe del Mar’s classic chill out tracks, or a departure from their usual tunes? There will be a mix of classic Cafe del Mar tunes from their compilations being played live during the day and then as then the dance music kicks in after sunset
Muju will be hosting Cafe del Mar both on October 8 and November 26. How will the two events differ? The main difference will be the line-up of artists, however the concept will remain the same as we are sure that one experience will not be enough for the end of summer!
What can we expect on the day? Sophisticated fun. A mix of good music (both DJs and live artists), great ambiance, delicious food, chilled drinks, an amazing beach and pool set-up and lots of party people!

What is Cafe del Mar?
Café del Mar is quite possibly the most emblematic venue in Ibiza, famous all over the world even to those who have never visited. Set up in the late 70’s by three friends, Café del Mar was an instant hit with its stunning surroundings and classy background sounds. The striking décor designed by the internationally renowned Luis Guell add the final touches to make for an unforgettable visit; the sensuality and eroticism plastered across every wall contrasts perfectly with the sand, sea and sunsets that adorn its veranda.
The Blues, Jazz and Classical music found emanating from some of the island’s top musicians was very different to the norm of Ibiza, attracting guests such as Frank Zappa (Yes), Jon Andersson (Vangelis) and Mike Oldfield. As the bar grew in stature, artists such as ‘A man called Adam’, ‘Underworld’ and even ‘Moby’ could be found performing in front of the folding waves and Conejera Island. These artists, along with an ever stretching list, have found their names on the back of the world famous Café del Mar CD. With well over a million sold worldwide, Café del Mar has come a long way since its inception. Numerous other artists have also been known to pay their respects to Café del Mar, with the bar having become an industry byword for chill-out cool.
Now with franchises stretching from Pennsylvania to Singapore, the combination of sophisticated music, dazzling scenery (after all, it wasn’t named ‘café by the sea’ for nothing) and outstanding service make for a winning combination the world over.
