Bahrain is not well known for its opera, but that might all change with the opening of a professional production of Mozart’s masterpiece Don Giovanni at the Bahrain Conference Centre on January 28 and 29, before moving on to Beirut and Cyprus later in the year. Good food and wine will make up part of this very Italian evening.
Don Giovanni has long been a favourite among opera audiences, and will be performed by an acclaimed cast from the UK, led by Marc Callahan and Mina Katerina (both pictured) along with an orchestra hand-picked from the very best in the Gulf. In a thrilling twist on the traditional staging, the singers will not be glued to the stage but will move around the audience in a choreographic mastery which will mean they can flirt with the ladies, tease the youngsters or smash a glass against the wall as the Don makes a hasty retreat at the end of Act One.
Tickets cost BD35 each, including dinner and wine (or BD66 for a couple), and can be purchased from Al Osra, Bookcase, the Crowne Plaza, or by calling 39 609 130. A substantial donation from ticket sales will be made to the RIA Institute.
