Return of SaudiStock
If you remember the first SaudiStock, which took place in 2010, you’ll be as excited as we are at the announcement of SaudiStock II – a kind of ‘battle of the bands’ featuring musicians who jam together at Aramco in Saudi Arabia and want the chance to get their sounds out to a wider audience.
Part one takes place on March 15 with bands FBR and Hard Candy going up against each other. The winner, based on crowd appreciation, gets to play at the Diplomat party brunch the next day.
Part two, with a further two or three bands still to be announced, is scheduled for April 5 with the winner playing brunch on April 6.
And the victors of these two sessions will go head to head at a later date for a showdown final. SaudiStock II March 15, 9pm, Fiddler’s Green, Radisson Blu Hotel. Entry free, special weekend packages available on room and brunch for Saudi BAe and Saudi Aramco ID holders. (Call 17 531 666).
Red Bull Music infosession and John Talabot gig Basically the Bahrain infosession is an extension of the global Red Bull Music Academy (www.redbullmusicacadem.com). Every year, artists from all around the world can fill out an application that gets reviewed by professional producers, artists and musicians from the Red Bull Music Academy and they select a small number who are invited to attend one week of music sessions, recordings, workshops and gigs - this year the Red Bull Music Academy will take place in New York.
The local infosession is meant to raise awareness of the academy among artists and musicians in Bahrain and to drive them to send their applications – in 2010, the academy took place in London and Bahraini Hasan Hujairi was the first Arab artist selected to attend.
The session features a group of around 40 Bahrain and Saudi-based artists, producers, DJs, musicians and vocalists taking part in a kind of music industry workshop with performance, technical and exposure advice from Barcelona-based star DJ John Talabot who will also be playing what promises to be a buzzing set at Coral Bay later in the evening. Infosession, March 2, Al Riwaq Gallery and A Night With John Talabot, Coral Bay, 9pm.
Much hilarity at JJ’s tonight with the UK’s number one cutting-edge comedy magician, Paul Zenon, who’s got appearances from Hollywood to Bollywood under his belt.
For the past 25 years, he’s brought his unique combination of contemporary trickery and streetwise stand-up to the stages and screens of Britain and over 30 countries worldwide – it’ll be interesting to see what the Bahrain crowd makes of him.
Joining him on the bill is Newcastle born comedian Mickey Hutton who has performed all over the world in venues as far apart as the Falklands, Shanghai, Jakarta and Mumbai.
He has written and directed for television as well as appearing in front of the camera on shows as diverse as Monarch Of The Glen and Crocodile shoes and on stage in John Godber’s award-winning play, Bouncers. At the moment he is writing his second novel and still regularly compères at the Comedy Store in London. Craic Attack, JJ’s Music Hall, March 22, 8pm, BD5. Call (39 329 083).
