We meet the rocking resident band at the Dublin bar in Juffair
Time Out Bahrain staff
Hot Beats consists of Evens Lamarre (28) – vocals and rhythm guitar; Josh Gendron (26) – lead guitar; Gabriel Monzerol (21) – vocals; Marie Monette (26) – keyboards; Sébastien Gemme (30) – drums; Marc-André De Blois (26) – bass and Rita Lahkim (23) – vocals.
They play an eclectic mix of floor fillers from classic rock ‘n’ roll to summer hits, dance, hip-hop, R’n’B, rock and more and their appearance of really enjoying themselves is contagious - we defy you not tap your toes even if you’re not in full-on, dance floor shape-shifting mode.
How long have you been playing or singing? EL – About 14 years – half my life so far.
GM – Well I’d say I’ve been singing forever but professionally for two years.
MM – I’ve playing piano since I was eight.
SG – I’ve been playing drums for 16 years.
MD – I’ve been playing since I was 11 years old, I also play soul guitar and I’m self taught.
RL – I’ve been singing as long as I can remember and I also play violin.
What are your favourite songs to perform and to listen to? EL – To perform is easy, it would have to be Dancin’ in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. To listen to, that changes all the time, at the moment it’s LCD Soundsystem, All My Friends.
JG – My favourite to perform is Bring me to Life by Evanescence. At the moment I’m listening to a lot of the metal band Periphery.
GM – Don’t laugh, to perform it’s Britney Spears’ Toxic. To listen to, The Adventures of Raindance, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
MM – It’s got to be Dancing Queen by Abba to perform and She’s So Heavy by The Beatles to listen to.
SG – To play definitely Little Wing, Hendrix and to listen to, all sorts of rock specially Led Zeppelin and jazz.
MD – I love to play Enter Sandman by Metallica and to listen to, hmm Johnny Cash and I really like Shine Down.
RL – To perform, maybe Someone Like You by Adele or I Will Survive and to listen to, lots of rock, I love Radiohead.
Tell us something that people don’t know about you that will surprise our readers and maybe the others in the band? EL – I’m a painter. Walls or pictures? Ha, ha, pictures, I’m actually trained in fine arts.
JG – Here I’m playing rock but I’m a classically trained guitarist.
GM – I dropped out of university to get into music and I also play drums.
MM – I like to sew, I make things.
SG – I have an obsession with headphones, I collect them.
MD – I’m also a writer, I’m writing a novel.
RL – I used to be a nerd, I was a complete geek in high school and I’m still more comfortable in running shoes than in heels.
Other stuff you need to know Hot Beats love Bahrain, they reckon it’s a bit like a hippy colony with lots of different types of people who are all here to party (that should tell you something about Dublin’s). Their most requested numbers are Zombie and Killing in the Name of. They’re six weeks into a six-month contract and they’re on every night except Sunday.
