So you’re about to take over the decks at JJ’s, where else on the island will people have seen you performing? I Started off here at the legendary BJ’s nightclub (now JJ’s Music Hall), after a short spell away from Bahrain I came back and took up residency at Cocoon Lounge. I’ve also played most of the events at the dragon, such as Pacha, Bora Bora and Cafe del mar.
How long have you been DJing and how long have you been in Bahrain?
Since I was a wee kid! Always managed to blag a booking for school discos and the local village pub! I’ve been in Bahrain on and off for the past five years.
How did you get started?
Professionally, when I went out and bought two Technics and a pile of vinyl, locked myself in my flat and learnt to mix! I was around 23 and had just got suspended from my job for a month on full pay, so perfect timing really! With regards to Bahrain, I was forwarded an email from a friend that said BJ’s was urgently looking for a DJ. Five days later I abandoned my Job, flat and everything else and jumped on a plane! Best decision I ever made!
What/who are your musical influences? Everything really. Although I am known as a house DJ, I spend most of my time listening to other types of music. I collected vinyl from an early age, so I was into the whole 80s’ vibe, starting from punk to ska, then new age etc.. I was really into Spandau Ballet, but I probably shouldn’t have mentioned that!
What sort of things can we expect to hear from you at JJ’s? Again, everything! I have a massive music collection, so it will be a whole range of stuff from the 70s till now. Rock, indi , R’n’B, pop and a bit of house. The new albums on my iPod as of now are Missy Higgins, Dodgy, Dexys, Vintage Trouble, Noel Gallagher and Muse. (We’re seriously impressed.)
Will you be doing any special nights – I hear the school disco was very popular during the anniversary celebrations? I’m ready for anything! I’m sure we will have a whole range of nights, from School Disco to rock nights. I’m especially looking forward to December as I have an artillery of unheard rock and indi Christmas gems that I have been dying to play for years!
Are you planning on running quiz night? For sure, although most of my knowledge is music related so I will be working hard to make it an enjoyable all round affair! These days you need a team of iPhone spotters to keep it fair too!
What’s your personal favourite song/track and why? Easy, a track by the amazing Australian artist Missy Higgins called ‘Where I stood’ . The whole track from the writing to the arrangement and her vocal delivery is just perfect. A couple of years ago the house label Fierce Angel did a re-sing, turned it into a house track and ruined it. I never played anything from that label again. I was horrified!
Anything else our readers should know about you? Hmm.. Probably more that they shouldn’t! Most of my skills are not really transferable to Bahrain, but I’m skilled in British sign language and back in the UK I was an interpreter for deaf blind people. I also used to write for international DJ magazine, so if you’re looking for a upfront music column, be sure to let me know! Ha ha. (We just might take you up on that.)
