As I’m writing this, news starts appearing about the demise (or at least, considerable down-sizing) of HMV in the UK and Ireland and it got me thinking, while people spend thousands on HD TVs, Blu ray DVD 5.1 surround-sound systems for their movies, when it comes to listening to and buying music, a majority of people are happy to purchase or, even worse, download for free, poor sounding MP3 files. Obviously people don’t tend to buy many CDs anymore, but why have we seen a downgrade in quality as acceptable? Usually things fall into oblivion when something better comes along. With CDs versus MP3, the exact opposite is true. I’m often asked why the music I play in JJ’s sounds so sharp and crisp? This is because 90 per cent of it is Wav/Flac (CD quality). Anyway, not enough space here for me to go on, so will jump off my soap box! Lets talk Music!
Motion City Soundtrack - Go (Columbia) This is my ‘Album of the Month’, although released late last year, it’s been largely ignored until now. Recently re-promoted due to their upcoming tour and the success of their single True Romance, this is a perfect jangly pop punk album, mixing well-written lyrics and catchy riffs with an energetic delivery. Incredibly it’s their fifth album, but the first to be released on a major label. Certainly a band to keep a look out for this year! In the club It’s been a great month for promos landing in my inbox, with some really good house tracks you can hear me spinning at the weekends including a fantastic release from the Austrailian duo Random Soul with the 23rd release on their own label. Love Me Right features a powerful vocal performance from Kristen Pearson and includes a top remix from Polish producer Seb Skalski. Other hot tunes for me now include Grayson P ft Bobbi Depasois - Kickin in the Beat (Mjuzieek Digital), a fantastic update of a 90s’ house classic. Ted Nilsson, Garrett & Ojelay ft Pryce Oliver - Better Days (Conkrete) and finally the new Defected compilation Most Rated 2013, 30 tracks of pure uplifting house. Stand out tracks being Infinity - Infinity Ink, Disclosure - My Intention is War and Supernova - I Can’t Do Without You.
Essential for any DJ’s box. Once again, if you head to my Facebook page you will find a link to a monthly mix that you can download containing the above mentioned tracks and more! Finally, a few other tracks you may want to check out.
Currently doing the rounds on you tube is a fantastic cover of Taylor Swift’s I Knew You Were Trouble by Walk Off The Earth (more about them next month) and if you’re seeking the next Gangnam Style global hit, look no further than Weekend - Ona Tanczy Dla Mnie, currently causing a stir within Bahrain’s Polish community and worldwide and set to be the next song you hate, but can’t stop dancing to! Consider this your early warning! See you on the dancefloor!
