So then, we’re Back! After being ceremoniously sidelined a couple of months back due to some lucrative advertising coming in last minute, although I can’t say I blame them! Moving on, some of you may have noticed I’m no longer in the hot seat at JJs and have got myself a new home for the summer season at the beautiful beachside venue ‘Coral Bay’ where you can find me playing some nice deep and soulful house poolside during the day and some more upbeat house in the rejuvenated Karma Lounge at the weekends.
Anyway, enough self promotion, let’s talk some seriously good music! An album I was going to mention in my previous ill-fated column is still firmly lodged in my car stereo. The Virginmarys - King of Conflict (Cooking Vinyl) really could be one of the albums of the year. Only occasionally does an album come along and grab you by the throat and refuse to let go (Think Oasis, Definitely Maybe and Kings of Leon, Only for the Night) 12 pure rock and roll songs with gritty but heartfelt lyrics. The band has been likened to Led Zeppelin and The Foo Fighters with a touch of the Arctic Monkeys. Absolutely essential. You can pick this up for a mere $7 on Bandcamp (link below).
Another album to catch my attention this month is the debut from the Birmingham four-piece, er.. Peace entitled In Love. Ten tracks of indie-rock genius! It’s produced by Jim Abiss who was responsible for the debuts of the Arctic Monkeys, Adele and Florence and has struck gold once more. Definitely expect to hear plenty from these guys this year. Also worth a quick mention is another debut album, this time by the Bath songstress Gabrielle Aplin who has been kicking up a storm on YouTube the past couple of years and recently scored a UK number one with her cover of Frankie goes to Hollywoods The Power of Love. Having released a few low key EPs over the last year, she has been picked up by a major and her album English Rain is probably sat at the top of the charts as you’re reading this. An incredible singer songwriter.
Just time to rattle through a few of the juicer promos that have landed in my inbox this month. Starting off with the Decision EP, three tracks of deep tech by WLF, stand out track being Paris 03.Out now on Something Different Records. One of my favourite labels releases a remix EP of some of its finest tracks to date, Conkrete Remixed features tracks and mixes by scene heavyweights ATFC, Soul Avengerz, Pray for More and Garret & Ojelay. House legend Jon Fitz teams up with Matt Lightfoot to release the uplifting Won’t give you up with an awesome remix by Sick Electric, out now on Mjuzieek Digital. Lastly, my favourite this month is, MNEK vs Disclosure - White Noise (Scott Diaz Excursion), a cheeky little booty shaker that bears little resemblance to the original and available via his website at time of writing for free!
That’s it for now, once again head to my Facebook page to grab an uplifting monthly mix of tracks featured and more. See you by the pool!
