They’ll be performing six nights a week and continuing the popular Monday night live-oke sessions where guests have the chance to get on stage and perform with the band.
Vocals are provided by MC and rapper Sammy Dee, alongside Rush from Cape Town, South Africa, and the multi-lingual Leyla who has been singing and performing since the age of 11. The rest of the band is made up of Josee-Lise on keyboards, percussionist Karim on the drums, Karl on bass guitar and lead guitar by Montreal resident, Marc.
On the other side of the island at Muju they’ve said farewell to the popular Bulgarian jazz duo Hristina and Yana and brought in island regular Jamelo with a new singing partner Sariefa who’ll be entertaining guests nightly and at Friday brunch with a mix of jazz and soul.
Meanwhile, at Busters, the Old Cocoon at the Juffair Grand Hotel has relaunched as a proper pub and it’s probably one of the only places on the island where you won’t find wall-to-wall house music. DJ Dave Crane, known to many for his high profile appearances in Dubai, has taken up residence playing a very welcome mix of old school pop, 80s and the like, with regular promos, ‘back to school’ nights – not sure about the uniform theme – and lots to be announced for the new season.
Unusually, DJ Damian Dacosta has not deserted the island for the summer and has a few special nights coming up at his latest venue, Blaque Velvet Underground at the Grand Safir Hotel. Nights here usually don’t kick off until 2am but he assures us the special events will be a bit earlier for those of us who can no longer hack the all-nighters.
And we hear the Russian nights, launched just before Ramadan at Déjà vu, are likely to continue. It’s not surprising since it’s one of the only places on the island for the many Russian and Eastern European ex-pats to find a taste of home.
Events confirmed for August include the Psy tribute Denis, who’s due to perform at the Olive Hotel, Juffair, on August 8, or the first day of Eid if it’s different. Candee Beach also returns at the end of the month on August 30 but details were unconfirmed as we went to press so keep an eye onwww.timeoutbahrain.com for updates of these and other events as they’re announced.
