Can't wait for the next Bahrain grand prix? Check out the UAE race.
With one race to go before Abu Dhabi, as we went to press, it seems there’s no stopping Sebastian Vettel the German wunderkind, who’s not such a kid any more. With nine wins under his belt already this season, he is 90 points clear with only four races to go and the championship already in the bag. However, Kimi Raikkonen lifted the trophy at the Yas Marina Circuit last year and Lewis Hamilton was victorious in 2011 so there may yet be some upset in store.
Vettel’s dominance has made for a less than interesting season points-wise but for true racing fans it’s very much about the spectacle on the day and Yas, with its 21 corners and twilight race, certainly provides that.
And for the real petrol heads, support races confirmed for the weekend include the GP2 and GP3 Series, as well as the Porsche Supercup.
As well as the motorsport action on-track, Grand Prix ticket holders enjoy exclusive access to an inclusive and interactive entertainment programme in the Oasis areas behind the grandstands and entry to the after-race concerts at the Du Arena.
The headliners For some it’s all about the cars, for others it’s about the entertainment and Abu Dhabi sure has a feast lined up over F1 weekend.
Friday, November 1: Jay Z International mega star JAY Z - one of world’s most influential entertainers who’s sold around 50 million albums worldwide - will play in Abu Dhabi as part of his successful Magna Carta World Tour which has been garnering fulsome praise.
Of the pared down set and back to basics performance, the UK’s Daily Telegraph said ‘Drawing heavily on Magna Carta, a shaggy rumination on the downsides of fame in a paparazzi plagued world, the bare-bone setting allowed the songs to bristle in a way they didn’t in the studio, so that his broadsides against the vicissitudes of global celebrity were unexpectedly censorious and powerful’. Sounds like Friday ticket holders are in for a bit of a treat.
Saturday, November 2: Muse The UK three piece have sold more than 20 million records and are known for highly extravagent theatrical performances that are as interesting to watch as they are hear.
They’ve appeared at biggies such as Glastonbury with a brand of stadium electro classical rock that’s earned them two Brit Awards for Best British Live Act and front man Matt Bellamy described their latest offering ‘The 2nd Law’ as ‘christian gangsta rap jazz odyssey, with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia’. Ok then.
Sunday, November 3: Depeche Mode UK electronic music legends and early godfathers of the genre Andy Fletcher, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore will close this year’s big race weekend on Sunday night.
Best known for songs such as ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘People Are People’ they’ve been producing quality music since 1980 and have sold a massive 100 million records worldwide with 13 top ten albums in the UK.
Beats on the Beach
The 2013 edition of Abu Dhabi’s Beats on the Beach moves away from the huge international stars featured last year to showcase more local talent.
However US R&B star Ciara headlines the Friday night. A singer, dancer and model, she also stars in TV show ‘The Game’.
Other acts on Friday night include Arab Idol winner Mohammed Assaf, who played in Bahrain earlier this year, and Dubai-based British rockers Beat Antenna.
Hugely popular Lebanese singer Assi El Helani is top of the bill on Saturday, November 2, supported by the UAE’s own Shamma Hamdan, the first Emirati woman to appear on ‘Arabs Got Talent’, and Lebanese musician Jay Wud who covers everything from blues to heavy rock. Free. 7.30pm-1.15am, East Plaza, Al Sahil Beach, The Corniche, Abu Dhabi.
