Bahrain-based DJ on Keane, Bros and more musical highlights of the month
Time Out Bahrain staff
So then, it’s November, which means at the very tail end of last month, ie Halloween, Bahrain’s event scene saw some interesting developments. Not only was every club/bar/lounge on the island doing the usual Halloween parties, but the arrival of the Bahrain Music Conference on the same date meant there was an unprecedented amount of choice and the highest number of ‘international’ DJs Bahrain has seen for a long time all vying for your attention in one six-hour slot. With big events at the Sofitel, Ministry of Sound at Coral Bay, international DJs at Ibrida, SkyBar , Block 338, The Domain, Bushido and Black velvet underground and numerous all-inclusive deals at The Hub, Buffalo and the like, it will be very interesting to learn how this panned out! Not that I’m complaining of course, as it’s great to see some life spring back into this little island, but one word springs to mind, buses.
Anyway, again this has been a very good month for albums. With the run up to Christmas approaching, we have the usual bunch of ‘cash cow’ best ofs out in force. Usually there is one that will be the runaway winner and my money this year is on keane – ‘The Best of Keane’ (obviously). The marketing plan for this album is second to none, including a live concert syndicated to cinemas worldwide on release day. After five UK number one albums, there is so much amazing music on this album, including ‘Everybody’s Changing’,’ Silenced by the Night’,’Bedshaped’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. Having gone a bit quiet over the last couple of years, I feel this is going to propel them back on to the arena stages. Stocking filler sorted.
Other great albums to land this month include, Matt Goss – ‘Life You Imagine’. If that name sounds familiar , then you’ll be right, it’s the very same Matt from Bros fame of the 90s. He has apparently been making a name for himself at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas for his ‘Rat Pack’-style stageshow. Having been a bit of a fan (I’m not embarrassed) in my younger days, I was intrigued to hear this. What we have here is not dissimilar to Robbie’s (Williams) ‘Swing When You’re Winning’ album, ten (13 for the deluxe version) tracks of big-band swing, including a fantastic cover of his biggest hit, ‘When Will I Be Famous’. Not going to be for everybody’s taste, but I kinda like it. Another one for the stocking (I know it’s not Christmas for a couple of months, but nothing like being prepared). Something a bit more Rock n Roll to finish off with, the American rock band Cage the Elephant are back with their third album ‘Melophobia’ this month. Standout tracks being ‘Come a Little Closer’ ‘Black Widow’ and ‘It’s Just Forever’. A little darker than their previous two, but if it’s song-driven guitar rock you’re after, this is your album this month!
