Time Out editor Liz O’Reilly gives her weekly rundown of the island’s happenings
Tonight (Thursday January 30) at Bahrain Fort local boy made good Ala Ghawas is joined on stage by Likwid – who used to be La Movida. He’s launching a new album that they’ve collaborated on together with a free performance from 8pm.
This weekend also sees the launch of this month’s edition of the Bab Market at Bab Al Bahrain – we initially thought this was happening last week but apparently not, it’s today and runs through till Saturday (February 1). It’s the last weekend of each month through to May and timings are Thursdays 5pm-9pm, Fridays 9am-1pm and Saturdays 10am-9pm. There’s all sorts of entertainment, stalls featuring the work of local designers and artists, great food and lots more.
Tomorrow (Friday January 31) the BSPCA has its annual dog walk, get out in the fresh air and walk to raise funds for the animal rescue charity. Registration is at 9am and the walk starts at 10.30am and there’ll be a barbeque too.
Tomorrow (Friday) Bahrain Road Runners have a duathlon happening at the BIC. The race starts at 7.30am and participants will be running 10km followed by a 40km bike ride and then another 5km run. It’s too late to enter but you can certainly go along and shout encouragement. And if this leaves you feeling inspired there’s a marathon event coming up next week! Check out www.bahrainroadrunners.com for details.
Also tomorrow (Friday) Bahrain RFC Ladies team will mark their return to action after almost a decade in the wilderness tomorrow, when they take part in the Kuwait Ladies Sevens tournament which is being hosted here in Bahrain.
More than 100 players from the UAE and around the Gulf will be flying into Bahrain for what is the latest round of the Gulf Ladies Sevens League. Although officially hosted by Kuwait Scorpions RFC, due to the redevelopment of the pitches in Kuwait, Bahrain RFC has stepped in so it should make for some great home-based action which gets underway at 11am.
Saturday (February 1) Amwaj Marina Market has lots of arty bits and pieces and various stalls you won’t find anywhere else plus usually some great food.
Until February 20 there is a fabulous exhibition running at the Bin Mattar house in Muharraq. Inside India features the work of four Bahrain-based photographers capturing stunning images of everyday moments around the sub-continent. It’s open Sun-Thu 9am-1pm and 4pm-7pm.
This is one that’s coming up in a few weeks but it’s a cause that’s close to my heart. I think I may have mentioned it last week but just in case, The American Women's Association is hosting the ‘From Heart to Heart’ charity ball on Thursday, February 20. Tickets are BD30 and its raising funds to support heart attack patients at the Mohammed bin Khalifa Cardiac Centre at the BDF Hospital. It’s at the Movenpick and tickets are on sale now through the hotel.
