DJ Ravin in Bahrain

The godfather of the Buddha Bar compilations is performing in Bushido this month. We caught up with the eclectic DJ ahead of his arrival to chat about island life.

You’re currently both a DJ and a producer. Which role do you prefer?
I prefer DJ-ing because I enjoy sharing my music with the crowd and rocking the dancefloor.

What can Bahrain party-goers expect from your set at Bushido this month?
My style is inspired by deep, electro and progressive music, mixed on a journey of ethnic sounds.

Originally you were raised in beautiful Mauritius. How is your island upbringing reflected in your musical style?
There’s certainly a flow of aquatic sounds featured in my music. I believe island life also inspired me to make dreams come true.

What drew you to electronic music initially?
When I was 16, I was selling records [at a record shop] and everything just began to fall into place from there.

What led you to create the Buddha Bar compilations in the first place?
Firstly, my passion for music but also the flow and journey that a compilation album can take the listener on. I am motivated to create a feeling of euphoria in my music.

We hear you kick started your career in Paris. What took you to Europe?
My family was already established in France.

When you’re not involved in any musical projects, what can we find you doing?
I have a great appreciation for nature, including the beautiful beaches in the Maldives, and enjoy a variety of sports during my leisure time.

You’re no stranger to the region. What do you think of it?
I love the people in the Gulf. I always receive a warm welcome in this part of the world. There are also some really great clubs and nightlife events here.

What are your impressions of our little island nation?
I love Bahrain so much. It’s just great! I have thoroughly enjoyed my previous events here which have always been such dynamic parties. An evening at Bushido is always a memorable occasion. I simply cannot wait.

You’re stranded on a desert island – what couldn’t you live without?
Music, love, cell phone and my Mac.
DJ Ravin is performing at Bushido’s sixth anniversary event on May 29 alongside Christina Milian, DJ Carlos Campos and DJ Albert-L. It starts from 9pm until and there’s free entrance for all. Call 1758 3555.
