We ate all the pies

  • Warbler
Admittedly, Warbler, at the back of Exhibition Road, is not in the most salubrious area of town – in fact my lunch companion didn’t even know it was there and said he probably wouldn’t have ventured in to try it on his own.

But one look at the pies and he was hooked, he was also pretty impressed the with décor and atmosphere of the place – it’s huge but at the same time cosy and random odd touches like the Blues Brother guarding the door, an original red British telephone box and life-size pirates galore, give the place a fun vibe even on a quiet lunch time.

I’ve been waxing lyrical about the pies for some time and wanted to make sure they were still up to scratch so I chose the steak and ale while my companion opted for chicken and mushroom.

If these don’t float your boat ,there’s also chicken and bacon, steak and kidney, fish, chicken curry (a slightly odd choice for a pie filling but, I’m told, very popular) or a delicious shepherd’s pie which I tried on my last visit.

Our food took a little while, but that’s because it’s cooked fresh and it was worth the wait to see the look on my dining companion’s face as the pies arrived at our table.

My steak pie would have done Desperate Dan proud – Google cow pie if you don’t know what I mean – and I’m sure more than one chicken was tucked under the pastry on my pal’s plate.

Speaking of pastry, it was light and crumbly, just the right side of greasy and with a faint hint of salt – melt in your mouth and the perfect accompaniment to the rich filling.

The steak in my pie was more than plentiful, in fact I have never managed to finish a whole one and I’m not a small eater. The secret is to make a hole in the pastry and dip your chips (it comes with these and salad) into the gravy.

The ale in the gravy might not be to everyone’s taste but for me it adds a good biting sweetness to the rich dark juice.

The chicken, on the other hand, came in a delicious creamy light sauce with big chunks of breast meat and heaps of succulent fresh mushrooms.

We’re a pair that like to talk but I’ll confess, the table fell silent as we tucked in and stayed that way for a good while as we ploughed through these enormous portions.

I’d like to say we moved onto dessert in the interests of research but, to be honest, there simply wasn’t room for another morsel and, once again, the pie beat me, despite its deliciousness I didn’t manage to clean my plate – not sure if that’s a good thing or bad.
