Whenever we visit My Café, we feel as if we’re dining at a unique restaurant, that’s seen some real craft and care, but also visiting the house of a decadent aunt whose wish is to fill us up to bursting-point with delicious home-cooking.
So much effort has clearly gone into every aspect of this place (which means we can definitely forgive the Spartan portions that simply highlight the quality of each and every entrée) and yet none of it feels pretentious, overdone or unwelcoming. Instead, the team takes this wonderful food and then adds a family-style wholesomeness to it which, in turns, plucks the heartstrings as well as the taste buds.
This is why the veal cheeks do not arrive on an austere plate with a miserly trickle of purée, but instead on a huge mound of creamy fergola which instantly, fleetingly, makes the world a better place.
It’s also why the raspberry soufflé is twice the size of every other soufflé you’ve ever had in your life and then they cut it open and fill it with ice cream. The cool creaminess instantly bores through the perfectly baked dessert like a red hot ball of nickel through a frozen lake, leaving you with a glorious, gooey mess to ladle into your unworthy gullet.
There are so many things to commend here even aside from the food. Carefully chosen cookery books displayed by the entrance provide a shorthand to My Café’s gourmet intents. The staff are attentive and full of enthusiasm. The outdoor dining area is a concealed nook festooned with lights and greenery which invite conversation and confidences. It works on every level and it’s a place to bring friends or family for a leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Sure, a meal at My Café is a little luxury and the prices are commensurate, but indulgence without a little pain is no real indulgence at all. Whereas so many bistros go for refinement without depth, My Café has a heartbeat, a personal touch which is impossible to fake.
