Never judge a book by its cover. It’s important to remember this when arriving at this Lebanese restaurant, located in the gargantuan Gulf Hotel. Named after the Lebanese town of the same name, Zahle is visually impressive; think street lamps, a bridge and various water features. Sadly, it’s the theatrical interior and the excellent belly dancer, not the food, that is the star of the show.
Plates from the kitchen keep arriving, but all are underwhelming. Tabbouleh is devoid of bulgur, while homous tends to be overloaded with oil and hot mezze such as spinach sambusak are a tepid affair. Things pick up slightly with the beautifully presented shish kebab, which sits in a golden box on top of warm fluffy Arabic bread and burning coals. Essentially, dishes are agreeable if unspectacular.
Owing to its fun surroundings, friendly staff, live band and belly dancer, Zahle has the potential to be something special; it just needs to spice up its effort on the food front.
