Push open the doors to Kontiki and you’ll find a stylish restaurant serving some of the most delicious and carefully prepared Asian food in town. The menu may not hold many surprises, but all the standards we’ve tried are well done. Start your oriental feast with a flavoursome soup or crunchy spring rolls before moving onto mains. Standard fail-safe options like rice noodles livened up by the likes of spinach, shitake mushrooms, spring onions, bean sprouts and peppers don’t disappoint, while the selection of sushi also impresses.
The likelihood is that dessert will defeat you – portions here are big and complaints are rare – but if you can manage it, the homemade coconut ice cream or wattalapan (custard flan, jaggary palm syrup and roasted pecan nuts) makes for a flawless finish. Kontiki is a cut above the general standard and while dishes do cost, you do get five-star service. For a taste of the orient in the heart of Manama, head here.
