There’s something a little upsetting about Pizzeria Café Italia. It might be the curious placement of some tables ‘al fresco’ in the mall itself, or the laminated menu that falls apart in your hands, but this Italian restaurant feels just that little bit tacky.
Catering for the frenetic groups of shoppers, maybe the restaurant places more emphasis on fast, quality food than its decor, but as you sit at your table craning your neck for a waiter, you’ll find the trade off a little perplexing, because the food isn’t really worth the wait. The bruschetta starter is lacklustre and nondescript – the bread is over-toasted around the edges and the toppings slide onto your plate with a defeatist plop. Although pizza is Café Italia’s forté, and the menu goes to great lengths to explain the culinary history of the dish.
The finished article, when it arrives, is actually fairly good. Not too greasy, but moist enough that you don’t need a mouthful of water with each bite; the pepperoni bella would be enough to save your dining experience from the depths of mediocrity, if it wasn’t for the over-long wait, and the sheer difficulty in paying for your meal and leaving this lacklustre café.
