Bushido

Reasonably priced options abound for lunch at this stylish Japanese

  • Bushido
What I really like about the lunch offering at Bushido is the sheer volume of options you have. Firstly, there’s a set three-course menu where you can choose from eight starters, seven mains and three desserts. And then there’s a whole other menu dedicated to bento boxes and sushi platters. There’s poultry, meat, fish, seafood and even vegetarian. Talk about catering to varying taste buds.

My fussy tastes are satisfied on the day of our review with the light bento box option (although I’m not sure ‘light’ is the right word).

It comes with miso soup, salad, steamed vegetables and rice, grilled salmon and six pieces of sashimi followed by a fruit platter. I’m certainly not making any plans for dinner.

But all of it is good. Seriously good actually. I am particularly in love with the grilled salmon which is covered in a sweet and sticky teriyaki sauce and goes well with the fresh, crispy salad. My dining companion, who opted for the set menu, is also enjoying a salmon main (it’s gone in a matter of minutes) which follows a rather delicious platter of eight ‘crunchy’ maki rolls and precedes a couple of scoops of incredibly smooth and refreshing mango and lemon sorbet.

Although we’re given a veritable feast, it is all served quickly. Just as it should be for a working business lunch. The service is consistent, attentive (perhaps too much so, however, when three waiters appear at your table at once) and efficient. It’s also very reasonably priced for what you get – they’re definitely not stingy with their portions. But, it has to be said, the ambience is really lacking. It’s hard not to feel strange in Bushido during the day when it’s so much more popular as a night spot and it becomes obvious, in the harsh light of day, that the furniture is in need of a spruce-up.

Despite that, this multi award-winning business lunch at Bushido should not be overlooked. In fact, with just a few more bodies, a bit of bustle and a slight decor upgrade it is easily un-missable. And when it gets a bit cooler, a lunchtime bento break on the floating terrace will be a must.

The decor is nice but the food is disgusting. The bar music is depressing as hell! It's as if you're in some kind of mourning ceremony. My Martini was almost room temperature and funny tasting....

    I'll never go back.
