I’m a regular at Mei N Yu at Amwaj Lagoon so was rather pleased when Time Out asked me to check it out officially. I can only say, something seems to have changed as the dining experience fell short of the usual excellence.
To start with I chose the house special of minced chicken wrapped in lettuce leaves which was OK but certainly nothing more than that. The portion was generous with plenty of extra chicken alongside the wraps but the special sauce seemed rather heavy on soy and something almost sickly sweet rather than the usual subtly spicy flavour.
My dining companion chose the chef’s special mushroom soup, described as cappuccino of wild mushrooms – this looked divine with its frothy top but sadly the taste was somewhat bland and it needed lots of salt and pepper. Some would say mushroom soup is innocuous and not intended to be a strong flavour, however I really don’t like it as I generally find the taste slightly musky. I sampled this one and there was that little flavour, even I could have eaten it.
We fared better with our main courses. My chum went for the chicken burger, which was huge and topped with a generous helping of mushrooms, onions and salad accompanied by piping hot French fries, crispy and cooked to perfection.
I opted for the crayfish thermidor – crayfish and mushrooms in a remoulade sauce with sautéed vegetables and gratin potatoes – and, on this one, I could not have asked for better.
Big chunks of juicy crayfish and very lightly cooked mushrooms swam in the delicately-flavoured, creamy mustardy sauce. The veggies came al dente and tasted fresh while gratin potatoes are always a firm favourite, cooked firm with just a slight browning off the cheese sauce.
I must mention though another member of our party whose peppered steak salad was so chewy she likened it to trying to chow down on a chunk of leather. To be fair they did offer to replace the dish and did not charge for it but, this seems to be another indication that all is currently not as it was at Mei N Yu which is a shame as, up until now, it has been one of my favourite Amwaj eateries.
Whatever the problem is, the crayfish thermidor proved they can still produce a delicious meal so I hope things get back to normal soon.
