Sample the delights of a new vegan section at Café Amsterdam
If ever you’ve dined at Café Amsterdam before (and if you haven’t, you definitely should…) you’ll know of its eclectic range of tasty dishes, from the juicy Dutch burger to the comforting shepherd’s pie. This is a restaurant that serves everything from breakfast to afternoon tea, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the kitchen team have now ventured down the path of veganism, having recently introduced a brand-new section on its menu dedicated just to cruelty-, dairy-, egg-free dishes.
“The main reason we included a vegan section was based on our guests’ feedback,” says operations manager and chef Joan Gomez. “There are not really options for vegan food on the island and it was a challenge to develop very successful recipes, keeping the taste and presentation accordingly.” Which is why they recruited Chef José, who previously managed three vegan restaurants in Peru called Quinoa.
While the Peruvian superfood does make an appearance on the menu, alongside the likes of a chickpea burger and charcoal roasted vegetable terrine, the dish that steals the limelight is the creamy avocado rice, topped with avocado tempura (a revelation) for a bit of crunch, and fresh, grilled cherry tomatoes and sprout salad.
