Walking into The Conservatory is a bit like entering a teashop in rural England. The small rooms are all furnished with white wicker chairs, and the tables finely laid with tasteful crockery – the floral cushions and the menu finished off with a yellow ribbon means it’s all a bit Laura Ashley.

Try the house breakfast, which is big enough for two; scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or sautéed mushrooms on toast, a fluffy croissant, a sweet Danish pastry, freshly squeezed orange juice and smooth coffee served up in a cafetière. The sautéed mushrooms are spot on, and the coffee is served in a big jug, so you don’t need to keep reordering.

With such an impressive selection of homemade cakes on offer, it’s impossible to leave without trying one. Steer yourself towards the date cake, which is sweet, but moreish, with a shortbread base and a warm, gooey date and walnut filling. The Conservatory is the perfect place for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, and a great spot to meet up with friends for a leisurely catch-up.
