How it promises to transform your body Whether you want to lose weight, pack on muscle or just increase your fitness, a programme can be designed to transform your body any way you like – you just have to spend the time in the gym.
So what happens? You start off with a short meeting with Andy, in which he asks you a bunch of questions about your general fitness and what you would like to achieve from having a personal trainer. I asked for an all-round programme that would increase my fitness, build some muscle and lose a bit of the loose stuff around the waist. Session one was cardio. After a warm-up run we started with as many push-ups as you can do in a minute, and then did the same for sit-ups and chin-ups. A quick stretch and a sip of water and it was on to two minutes sprinting on the treadmill, two minutes of dips and another two minutes of spinning on the bike. That’s as far as we got – thoroughly exhausted, I had to call it quits before reaching the end of the session. Andy admits that he may have over-estimated my fitness level; I admit that I’m not as fit as I thought I was. In session two we focus on weights training – bench press, arm curls, triceps, shoulders, squats, lunges and more. Along the way Andy explains the correct way to do each exercise for the maximum benefit. It was a real eye-opener.
The verdict Expect slight exhaustion and sore muscles in the short term, but a lean mean fitness machine in the long term – if you stick to the recommended three or four times a week visits to the gym. For now the most tangible result is a clear and thorough exercise programme specifically designed for my needs and ability. It’s definitely given me the guidance and motivation I needed in the gym.
