We go backstage with Paul Fraser and the crew of this Bahrain TV show
Time Out Bahrain staff
We talk to Paul Fraser, the man behind Bahrain TV’s new show Lifestyle to find out what’s involved and how members of the audience can get in on the act.
In recent months you may have spotted a new programme showing on the local television station featuring people like you, out and about around the island.
Lifestyle is the brainchild of Paul Fraser, ‘star of stage, screen and dog food commercials’ (his wife’s words, not ours) and it goes behind the scenes at some of the island’s events, big and small, and meets the people who make them happen.
Paul says: ‘The idea is pretty much Time Out on the telly! We cover everything from expat association balls and events to all sorts of sports – rugby, football, watersports, netball… whatever.
‘On the arts side we’re interested in exhibitions and shows, concerts, stand-up, panto and musicals then of course there’s food, fashion shows, health and fitness – pretty much anything the viewing public’s interested in, we’re interested in too.’
Paul recently interviewed UK footballer Razor Ruddock when he came to Bahrain for a sportsmen’s dinner – a meeting which led to the pair singing karaoke in Kicks, the bar Paul also manages.
And in the coming months he’ll be catching up with Big Ron (Atkinson) and Frank Bruno, who’ll also be coming to the kingdom for similar events.
He’s also on the lookout for local celebs and people with interesting and quirky lifestyles or hobbies.
And in late January look out for some culinary globetrotting with the Gulf Hotel. The first two shows featuring Thai and Mexican cuisine have already been filmed and viewers will see how it’s done on the show then be able to download the recipes and method from Lifestyle’s Facebook page. If they want to be really posh there will be a menu to download for each dinner too.
Paul adds: ‘The core of the show is to be a bit quirky, not staid, informal, fun, punchy and fast-paced when material allows – at least that’s the final goal!
‘It’s a show that’s intended to highlight the multi-cultural and multi-national make up of Bahrain without being too cheesy.’
Lifestyle’s produced by Paul and wife Heather Patrick, hosted by Paul and mostly filmed by cameraman Isa Saqeer. Of whom Paul says: ‘Isa is a bit legendary among the reporters and always knows the best shots and captures the best footage, the reporters have all just started doing TV as we wanted fresh faces and voices to develop – so he is the proverbial Godfather.’
Heather is the one that goes to all the meetings and arranges coverage and technical requirements with the authorities.
