Every now and then a movie comes along that is so subtle, with performances so nuanced, and a plot that is happy to crawl along and meditate on life’s big questions, that it’s beauty is almost impossible to put into words. Overdrive is not that movie.
What we have here is an over-the-top action movie with plenty of explosions, car chases and cheesy one-liners. There are enough thrills in the trailer to fill most movies, and coming from the makers of Taken and writers of Wanted and 2 Fast 2 Furious, we’re not surprised.
Scott Eastwood (yes, Clint’s son) and relative newcomer Freddie Thorp (are half brothers who steal luxury cars for a living. They head to the south of France to find a 1937 Bugatti and, before long, get caught up with the local crime boss who doesn’t take too kindly to them muscling in on his turf. Or stealing his car.
So Eastwood and Thorp get to ham it up in stunning scenery, while driving incredible cars and hanging out with glamorous ladies, while we get to watch. Talk about living vicariously.
We’re sure it’s not going to win over many critics, but who knows, we might even be witnessing the start of a The Fast and the Furious-style franchise being born.
The bottom line
Perfect for a weekend afternoon.
