Six private schools in Bahrain will no longer set homework so their students can take part in sport and other activities instead.
Homework was abolished in public schools across the Kingdom this year in the hopes that the change will help pupils uncover raw talents across the Kingdom, reports Gulf Daily News.
The schools that have signed up are Hawar International School, Riffa Views International School, Al Hekma International School, the French School in Bahrain (Le Lycée Français MLF of Bahrain), Nadeen School and Beacon Private School.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Affairs president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa said, “The educational approaches in the kingdom are based on the principles of development in its various scientific and educational areas, while deserting the traditional methods in the educational process.
“As a proof of which is abolishing homework, which is a clear burden on students and limits their ability to practise their favourite hobbies in the youth, sports, social and cultural aspects.”
Shaikh Nasser also called for studies into the correct school day length to keep kids engaged and performing at their best.
Numerous studies have shown that homework does not improve grades.
