App developers have created a whole host of products designed to help you get the most out of Ramadan. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites.
Ramadan Kareem by The Muslim Giving Project
Each day, uncover a new sadaqah inspiration (sadaqah is an Islamic term that means ‘act of charity’). A new page will pop up every day of Ramadan for an important humanitarian or social issue. There is a ‘Did you know’ section to introduce the subject (for example, world hunger), a related philosophical quote to reflect on, three acts that you can easily do that day to help the cause, and the details of related charitable organisations you can donate to or volunteer with.
Free. Available for iOS and Android.
Muslim Pro
This handy app is essential for anyone fasting on the move or in a foreign country – it works for more than 200 locations. It’s hugely popular and for good reason: combined in one is a prayer time calculator based on location, a Qibla locator compass, an Islamic Hijri calendar, useful maps of halal restaurants and mosques, plus the full Qur’an in multiple languages (including French, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, Indonesian and more) with audio recitations.
Free. Available for iOS and Android.
Find Mecca
This digital GPS allows you to find the Qibla from anywhere in the world by using the compass capability on your phone or tablet. Use the augmented reality mode to ‘see’ Mecca on-screen in the correct direction. Since it’s based on GPS, it’s very accurate – so no more estimating what direction you should be facing. It also lists the prayer times.
Free, with additional in-app purchases possible. Available for iOS and Android.
I Like Fasting
This one is aimed at kids and features Alif, a little girl who loves to fast. She explains why she fasts, and educates users on other values that are important throughout Ramadan. With fun, interactive activities, stories that children can read alone and more complex tales for an adult to help out with, this one will help children understand the meaning of Ramadan.
BD0.4 approx. Available for iPad.
Ramadan 2015
Re-launched for 2015, this popular app is a one-stop-shop for all things Ramadan. Packed full of general knowledge tips like the basics of Ramadan, what to read and how to look after your health when fasting, it also lists all five prayer timings by country and even has a handy alarm you can set to alert you to each one.
From BD0.7 approx. Available for iPhone, iPad and Android.
Time Out Bahrain
The Time Out Bahrain app features the content you’ll find online, including our full listings for Ramadan, including a comprehensive directory of the iftars and ghabgas taking place around the country. It’s a useful app to have on your phone all year round.
Free. Available for Android, iOS and Windows.
