Game, phone and match
Well done to the Bahrain football team for beating Uzbekistan and taking a further step to the next World Cup, and well done to player Sayed Mohamad Adnan Mahfood for bagging himself a Samsung mobile phone. The No 16 was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the match at Manama, which resulted in sponsors Samsung awarding him the phone. It appears to be the Lucido model, with 5MP camera and GPS navigation capabilities (we notice it’s not the top of the range Jet model, though – come on, surely he’s better than that).
Bahrain train
Plans have been announced to spend billions on a 180km public transport network in Bahrain, with new train lines, a monorail, tramway and bus routes. To be completed by 2030, it is rumoured the monorail itself could cost BD3 million. Hi-tech management equipment – including more speed cameras and CCTV – will be introduced first, intended to cut road fatalities by 30 per cent in 10 years. That said, Bahrain already has the lowest death rate on roads in the Middle East – according to a report released by the UN. It says the kingdom has deaths of 12.1 per 100,000 population per year, compared to 16.9 in Kuwait, 23.7 in Qatar, 29 in Saudi Arabia and 37.1 in the UAE.
Paris in Dubai
Our sister mag Time Out Dubai recently landed an interview with Paris Hilton, in the city to film her reality TV series, My New BFF. The editor presented the heiress with a Time Out goodie bag, containing among other things an ‘I [heart] BAH’ T-shirt, used to promote the launch of this very magazine (see if she wears it on the show). Someone unlikely to qualify as a BFF is Dubai’s newest nightclub, The Bed. Promoters said
Paris would be at the opening party, with tickets at BD20. However, she stated on Twitter: ‘I am NOT doing a club appearance at Club Bed tonight in Dubai.’ Oh dear. The Bed provided a full refund to angry partygoers.
