Sea rescue tragedy

Bahrain coastguard rescues pair of sailors stuck in extreme weather, but one man dies

Bahrain's coast guard crews have rescued a Bahraini and an Asian sailor after their ship got into difficulties in extreme weather conditions off the coast of Sitra, 10 kilometres south to Manama, the capital.

However, a third sailor, also an Asian, could not be saved and died in the accident.

The ship left the port on Sunday, and the police was alerted about the non-return of the three sailors in the evening.

An initial search and rescue operation involving four patrols and organised by the coast guard failed until midnight to locate the missing sailors. The operations, this time using six patrols and a helicopter, were resumed in the morning and the sailors were eventually found on Tuesday morning.
