Bahraini citizens can now get biodegradable rubbish bags from their local municipality offices in a bid to tackle plastic waste in the Kingdom.
Back in July, the government banned single-use plastic bags as well as the import of non-biodegradable plastic bags.
To prevent authorities from running out, citizens can pick up one bundle of plastic bags for free rather than the usual maximum of nine, reports Gulf Daily News.
When more stock is delivered in the coming weeks this will increase.
In the future, the biodegradable bags will be available in more convenient locations, including shopping malls.
A pilot scheme in April saw vending machines that dispensed the bags installed at Enma Mall in East Riffa, Al Muntazah Supermarket in Isa Town and Ramez Hypermarkets in Riffa and Askar.
Users needed to enter their CPR number and Electricity and Water Authority account number, at which point those eligible would receive a roll of bags.
